Traffic stop leads to drug-related arrest

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Indianapolis driver after a traffic stop near Seventh Street and Central Avenue when a police canine alerted to drugs in the vehicle.

Steven R. Katzenberger II, 30, 855 Homewood Drive, Indianapolis, was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of legend drug-injection devices and possession of a controlled substance, deputies said.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Gary Knoef stopped Katzenberger in Columbus at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, deputies said. Katzenberger was one of four people in the car and the only one with identification, deputies said.

Columbus Police Officer Chad Lehman and K9 Niko were called to check the vehicle and Niko alerted to the presence of drugs, deputies said.

Knoef located a BB gun, which looked like a replica of a handgun, under the driver’s seat, deputies said. He also found syringes, one with a liquid still inside, and marijuana in the vehicle, as well as non-prescribed Xanax in Katzenberger’s possession during the traffic stop, deputies said.

Katzenberger was released from the Barthlomew County Jail after his arrest under the county’s new pre-trial diversion program, deputies said.
