A solemn ceremony honored local police and firefighters for their work protecting the community and their counterparts who died trying to rescue victims on the fifth anniversary of terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

The old Bartholomew County Jail, which was slated to be demolished so it would not obstruct the view of the courthouse as motorists entered Columbus on a new bridge, got a year’s reprieve because of cost issues.

Plans for a new fire station to go up between Fairlawn and Flintwood subdivisions were approved by Columbus City Council.
