COLUMBUS
Michael J. Mayes, 65, of Washington Street, died at 8:32 p.m. July 16, 2017, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
Michael was born May 2, 1952, in Columbus, the son of Melvin J. and Violet M. Hill Mayes. He married Marsha L. Behrman July 7, 1973. He attended St. Bartholomew Catholic School through the 8th grade and graduated from Columbus High School in 1970. Michael retired from the U.S. Post Office and was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed fishing with his brother and nephew, working in his yard and was an avid pet lover. Michael also enjoyed watching the evening sunsets with his wife and loved spending time with family.
A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Clem Davis and Father James Brockmeier officiating. Calling will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church. Inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Bartholomew Catholic Church or the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
Survivors include his wife, Marsha; brothers, James E. (Caroline) Mayes of Florida, Robert J. (Paula) Mayes of Florida and Thomas W. (Diana) Mayes of Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Sandra Barnes of Seymour; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Dorothy A. Lay and Mary A. La Fave.
Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
