Paul Edward Schumacher

WESTPORT

Paul Edward Schumacher, 89, of Westport, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 23, 1928 in Batesville, Indiana, he was the second child of August J. and Ida Marie (Wissel) Schumacher.

Paul lived most of his life in Westport until 2009 when he became a resident at Morning Breeze Retirement Community in Greensburg.

Paul was an extremely loving, caring, giving and proud father, grandfather and friend to so many. Many knew him as “Schu” or “Paul-E.”

He was always so appreciative of the many friends and family members who came to visit him over the years. He truly enjoyed visiting with each one. He would often offer up words of advice or wisdom to all who sought it.

Paul began to lose his eyesight in the 1970s, completely losing his sight by the mid-1980s.

He was a proud man and never gave up, he stayed enormously independent until he broke a hip and became a full-time resident at Morning Breeze.

Paul was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a former member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Westport. It was through his Catholic faith that he lived a rewarding and blessed life.

Paul was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 681 at North Vernon and the IOOF Lodge No. 681 of Westport.

He is survived by his daughter, Paula Leanne (Levi) Kenner of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren, Courtney (Tyler) Idso of Stewartville, Minnesota, Andrew Brooks of Pine Island, Minnesota and Bre’Anna Brooks of Annapolis, Maryland; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Lane Idso; as well as his many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Annabelle Starkey, and brothers, Gerald and Robert Schumacher.

The family will receive family, friends and guests for visitation on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Bass and Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. There will be a rosary prayed at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018 with Father John Meyer officiating.
