Columbus residents braced for a winter storm that was expected to bring sleet, snow and ice throughout the day, while city and county road crews rushed to get a head start treating roadways.

Equipment on lines near Second and Lindsey streets, intended to protect electric lines from lightning, went bad and killed power to the downtown area for about 80 minutes.

Cold weather prompted more students to ride the bus from Jackson Township to Central Junior High and Columbus High schools, necessitating the rental of an additional bus to alleviate overcrowding.
