Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong ordered each of his department heads tentatively to cut 5 percent from their operating budgets and submit a list of public service challenges those cuts would create.

Inclement weather deteriorated several dirt and gravel roads in Jennings County, forcing county commissioners to ban traffic by heavy vehicles, including school buses, on more than 200 miles of county roads for several days.

Two young brothers believed to have been playing with matches in the hayloft of a barn west of North Vernon died of smoke inhalation when the loft caught fire.
