Olympians, Dogs, Jet cited for academics

High schools across the state did not get to have a spring sports season this year, but that didn’t stop coaches associations from selecting Academic All-State squads in their respective sports.

Several Bartholomew County seniors have been recognized by those coaches associations for their efforts in the classroom.

Columbus East’s Allison Mack and Emily Stiles made the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Academic All-State girls track team. East’s Elena Stoughton is an honorable mention selection.

Columbus North’s Paige Bishop has been selected to the ICGSA Academic All-State girls tennis squad. North’s Ali Bergman, Eva Chevalier and Cassidy May made honorable mention.

Hauser’s Sam Johnson has been named to the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Academic All-State team. He was one of only 15 seniors statewide to be selected.

North close to naming AD

Columbus North is on the verge of hiring an athletics director to replace Jeff Hester, who has moved on to become assistant athletics director at Carmel.

North High School principal David Clark said he’s down to two candidates, and the school is in the process of doing criminal background and reference checks.

“We’re pretty confident with our final two,” Clark said. “We want to get boots on the ground because July 6, we start ramping things back up again.”

Clark said he received 16 applications for the position.

“It’s an odd year,” Clark said. “A lot of people were wanting to hunker down, and just not a lot of movement, probably because of the (COVID-19) virus.”

Schneider ties for seventh

Luke Schneider, who will be a junior at Columbus North, fired a final-round 2-over-par 74 Wednesday and finished in a tie for seventh with a 151 in the Indiana Junior Championship.

Kody Reynolds, who will be a senior at Columbus East, and Luke VanDeventer, who will be a senior at North, tied for 26th at 161. Reynolds shot 82 on Wednesday, while VanDeventer had an 81.

Damon Dickey, who will be a senior at Franklin, won the tournament with an even-par 144, one shot better than Sam Williams of McCordsville and Maclean Dudasko of Zionsville.
