Over 7,000 responses to BCSC reopening survey so far

A little over half of Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. families have returned responses to a parent survey seeking data to determine reopening strategies for the fall semester.

Superintendent Jim Roberts said BCSC has received more than 7,000 responses since the survey was placed online on the school’s website at bcscschools.org, including a survey translated into Spanish.

Roberts stated at Monday’s board meeting that BCSC has more than 11,000 students, and parents are asked to fill out one survey per child, so about 60% of students are accounted for at this point.

“We did see some responses to our survey about, ‘This is going to feel odd if I don’t know what the plan is,’” Roberts said. “And we appreciate that take on it, but we were kind of asking what inclination that first inclination was of a parent to get the kids back in school and then what their concerns were about doing that, so we could build the plan around that.”

Parents and guardians can access the reopening survey by visiting https://forms.gle/kv8vXconSb9BPc2D7/. A Spanish form is also available at https://forms.gle/XzM1zkBmBJR4memn7. Parents and guardians are requested to complete the survey by Friday.

BCSC released a statement regarding the 2020-21 school year, along with the survey. The statement said that as BCSC makes plans to reopen, it will do so with the following “guiding principles” in mind:

Return as many students to our buildings as possible on Thursday, Aug. 6

Prioritize the health and safety of all students and staff members

Ensure equity of access to high quality instruction for all students

Provide families and students with choices and pathways that work best for individual learning needs

The statement said BCSC is currently reviewing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Gov. Eric Holcomb’s office, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH),and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) “to discern between recommendations and requirements.” The school corporation is also consulting with officials from the Bartholomew County Health Department.

“We will review the data provided, analyze the current circumstances at both the local and state level, and publicly provide more specific information regarding reopening on or about Monday, July 6,” the statement said.

The final reopening phase in Indiana from the pandemic is scheduled to begin Saturday, July 4.
