Marie Crusinberry

Solon, Iowa

Marie Iverson Crusinberry, 93, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Solon Care Center in Solon, Iowa. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.

Marie was born on Aug. 20, 1923, in Brandon, South Dakota, to Theodore and Minnie (Gjevre) Iverson. She grew up on a farm in Brandon, earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota and then went off to see the world! She held many interesting jobs during her career, notably teaching cryptology at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. and working at the U.S. Embassies in Uruguay and the Netherlands.

She married Thomas Crusinberry in 1964 and adopted his two children in 1966. Marie and Tom lived in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Columbus, Indiana; Venice, Florida; and Sarasota, Florida. She recently moved to Iowa to be near family. Marie was a tireless, dedicated volunteer for many arts organizations during those years and attended many concerts, opera, ballet and theater performances. Her strong Lutheran faith and love of music led to participation in church choirs everywhere she lived.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings; son, Thomas Crusinberry Jr.; and her husband.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Jim) Reck of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Susan Crusinberry of Columbus, Indiana; four grandchildren, Emily (Brett) Kahnert, Maren Reck (Jordan Scapinello), Dan (Alli) Reck and Patty (Vinnie) Muller; and five great-grandchildren, Ella and Jack Kahnert, Freya and Daphne Scapinello and Maria Muller.
