County begins process to repair veterans memorial

Bartholomew County officials have entered into a contract with an engineering architectural firm to analyze repairs needed on the county’s veterans memorial at the courthouse.

County officials estimate the repairs could cost $250,000 to $325,000.

Bartholomew County commissioners on Monday approved an agreement for $24,500 with Indianapolis-based DLZ to perform an analysis of the memorial and assist the county in obtaining bids for the project.

Funding for the agreement will come out of the county commissioners’ consultant fund, said county Auditor Barb Hackman.

The memorial, which was completed in 1996, is showing some extensive cracking and flaking of the limestone at its base, said Bartholomew County Commissioner Larry Kleinhenz.

“It’s been a gradual process, but we need to fix it,” Kleinhenz said. “It’s very noticeable.”
