Columbus police used an electric stun device to arrest an auto theft suspect who fled from them during a chase.

Officers were sent to a home in the 400 block of Center Street about the auto theft at 4:55 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers spoke to a man who said the suspect, later identified as Melvin G. Foree, 37, Columbus, approached him while he was outside and asked for a drink of water, Harris said.

A short time later, Foree is accused of jumping into a 1999 Chevy Silverado and taking it along with an attached trailer, Harris said.

A few minutes later, officers located Foree inside a fast food restaurant in the 600 block of Third Street, Harris said. Foree threw a cup of soda at the officers and fled on foot out of the restaurant, pursued by officers who used the stun device to arrest him, Harris said.

The stolen truck and trailer were returned to the owner.

Foree was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, auto theft and theft, Harris said.
