Flat Rock-Hawcreek notifies parents about reopening procedures

HOPE — Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. has sent a letter to parents detailing its reopening plans and will provide further information to families next week.

Superintendent Shawn Price said the school system will reopen to students on Aug. 4 with in-person classes, as well as virtual options for “students that are not able to attend here on campus due to extenuating circumstances related to COVID-19.”

“The safety of our students, staff, and community is always our first priority,” Price said. “All employees of the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. will receive training on COVID-19 symptoms and protocols as we prepare for students in the fall.”

According to Price, changes to school operation will include daily health screenings for students and staff members.

“Anyone experiencing COVID symptoms or having a fever over 100 degrees will be sent home or identified and steps taken at that point,” he said.

Students will be sent home until they are “free of symptoms and have not had a fever for 72 hours (absent of fever-reducing meds),” according to a statement from the school corporation.

Masks are being provided to all students and staff, but students will not be required to wear masks in the classroom, the statement said.

However, other situations may arise where social distancing isn’t possible and masks are required, such as on a school bus.

Price noted that a recent survey of parents’ thoughts on reopening showed that 30% of responses supported a rule requiring masks and 67% opposed such a rule.
