COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus North Spell Bowl team is the 2020 state champion for Class 1 of the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl’s Senior Division.

Team sponsor Katie Finney said that the team only missed one word out of 90. Their score was 118.

In the individual portion of the state competition, two North students — juniors Jiaxuan Wang and Rishi Rao — earned a perfect score of 120.

“The perfect spellers who competed in this portion of the state competition had to spell all 90 of the team portion’s words,” Finney said. Only three other students in the senior division earned the same score.

The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is a program of the Indiana Association of School Principals. According to the IASP’s website, the 2020 Senior Academic Spell Bowl State Finals were held virtually on Nov. 10.
