Melvin Lightfoot, lovingly called “Biggie” by family and friends, age 67, of Columbus, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Melvin was born January 26, 1953, in Courtland, Alabama, the son of George and Catherine Grant Lightfoot.

Mr. Lightfoot served as a busser at the Holiday Inn Hotel for 38 years. He had a gentle soul and determined spirit that never gave up. He loved his family, especially his twin brother, Elton, along with his many nieces and nephews. Melvin would go out of his way to help anyone and never met a stranger. He enjoyed his time working with the staff at D.S.I Columbus learning to be independent and really cherished that experience. Later in life, Melvin spent time working at Zaharakos. He will be remembered for the smile that he greeted everyone with and missed by those that know him.

Surviving are his sisters, Bertha Jones of Leighton, AL., Kathleen Anderson, special caregiver, of Columbus, IN., Annie B. (Earl) Newman of Indianapolis, IN., Marilyn (Gregory) Davis of Colorado Springs, CO., Janet (John) Viers of Decatur, AL., Orean (Lee) Edwards of Montevallo, AL.; brothers, Thomas (Cora) Lightfoot of Madison, AL., Elton Lightfoot of Indianapolis, IN., Willie (Sharon) Lightfoot of Courtland, AL.; uncle, Thomas Grant, also of Courtland, AL.; brother-in-law, Ernest (Christine) Clay of Town Creek, AL.; sister-in-law, Belinda Lightfoot of Huntsville, AL.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George E. Lightfoot, Lermis Lightfoot, Michael Lightfoot; sisters, Gladiolus Clay, Rosie Davis, Alexzine Lightfoot, Mary Lean Lightfoot and Jackie Lee.

A private visitation and funeral service will be held at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Bishop Ernest Clay officiating. Due to pandemic restrictions, we are limited to 50 people in our funeral home. We do ask that visitors follow the social distancing guidelines once inside the funeral home and masks are required.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
