Shirley S Milholland, 86, passed peacefully into the heavenly arms of her Savior on February 10, 2021. She is survived by her daughters, Toni Lance, Katrina (Dan) Wilhelm and Tami (Randy Robertson) Holland, sisters Kay (Verlan)Wray & Connie Adams, her 4 grandchildren, Zachary (Valerie) Lance, Sam (Lexie) Lance, Arnettie Sue Robertson, and Alex-Ann (Melle) Bakker and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Philip, and her parents and brother Johnny Satter.
While her last few years have been in the loving care of Homeview Health and Rehab, where she enjoyed coloring animal pictures, game shows and visits from friends and family. She was previously a deacon and member of the Scipio Presbyterian Church. She had a very strong and personal relationship with her Higher Power and knew that her next life would be pain free and everlasting.
Shirley had the most engaging spirit and never knew a stranger. She enjoyed playing Euchre, poker, and reading mysteries. However, her love of flowers and her ability to grow beautiful plants were her superpower. It was mentioned many times that she had a green soul instead of just a thumb. From Hibiscus to variegated Philodendrons, she could grow anything, a trait she has handed down to Tami. Shirley’s last job was delivering creations from Joyce’s Flowers. She always said that sending flowers was a way to send a hug and let someone know you were thinking about them.
Shirley was once a phone operator, dietician at Johnson County Memorial Hospital, newspaper delivery person, machine operator at CertainTeed Insulation in Shelbyville and worked in the greenhouse at Baxter’s Flower Shop. While she was young, she took dance lessons at Arthur Murray and when she was a telephone operator, she took a phone call from Irving Berlin.
Shirley, accompanying Phil, her husband of 52 years enjoyed many adventures on his motorcycle, looking for unique trees or any other gorgeous photographs. So many memories of our lives are in pictures that Daddy took of us and her. Together they sang a beautiful harmony that enhanced many holidays and car rides.
Shirley was a breast cancer survivor. Over the last few years, she had overcome many injuries in accidents and was incredible strong and resilient. This year she had even beat COVID, but when the Lord called her home, she was ready.
She raised her children to be open minded and that love is love. She was bold and brave, with a bawdy sense of humor. She always thought laughter was the best medicine.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Services will be at Dove Sharp and Rudicel Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon Indiana this Saturday February 13. Family visitation at 1pm, Public visitation from 2-4pm. Rev. Peter Jessen will be the officiant.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Shirley to the Scipio Presbyterian Church.
