Club Olympia nets top-10s, distance challenge wins

Ten Club Olympia swimmers achieved “Top Ten” times in Indiana Swimming for 2020-21, and 13 have won 21 Virtual Distance Challenge events.

Indiana Swimming recently sent out certificates to clubs with swimmers who had times that placed in the top 10 in the state during 2020-21. Club Olympia had 10 swimmers receive a total of 55 certificates, including nine first-place finishes.

Joshua Pendleton achieved the top time as a 10-year-old in seven events. He was first in the boys 10U Short Course 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and eighth in the 100 backstroke.

Tony Machavariani, at just 8 years old, had five Top Ten finishes in the 10-and-under age group, including a second place in the 200-meter freestyle. He also was third in the 200 IM, fifth in the 100 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the 100 breaststroke.

Brady Beyer finished first in the Boys 15-16 Long Course 200 breaststroke, third in the 400 IM, fourth in the 1500 freestyle, fifth in the 800 freestyle and seventh in the 100 breaststroke. He also placed second in the Boys 15-16 Short Course 400 IM, third in the 200 breaststroke, fifth in the 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle, eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM.

Olivia Morlok won the Girls 17-18 Short Course 1650 freestyle. She also took third in the 1000 freestyle, sixth in the 400 freestyle and 10th in the 500 freestyle.

Connelly Furnish (11/12) finished third in the Girls 11-12 Long Course 400 freestyle, fourth in the 200 freestyle, eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 50 breaststroke and 200 IM. She also was 10th in the Girls 11-12 Short Course 500 freestyle.

Rachel Sabotin (18) placed third in the Girls 17-18 Short Course 200 butterfly, fourth in the 1000 freestyle and 200 IM and sixth in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

Misha Machavariani finished fourth in the Boys 11-12 Long Course 400 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, sixth in the Boys 13-14 Long Course 800 freestyle and eighth in the 1500 freestyle and eighth in the Boys 13-14 Short Course 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle.

Ashley Freel took sixth in the Girls 15-16 Short Course 1000 freestyle; seventh in the Girls 15-16 Long Course 200 butterfly, ninth in the 800 freestyle and 10th in the 100 freestyle and 10th in the Girls 13-14 Short Course 200 butterfly.

Hope Westphal finished eighth in the Girls 13-14 Short Course 1000 freestyle and ninth in the 1650 freestyle. She also was ninth in the Girls 13-14 Short Course 1500 freestyle.

Maggie Johnson placed ninth in the Girls 17-18 Long Course 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle.

Also, in following the tradition established in 2016-17, the first year of the Club’s existence, Club Olympia swimmers excelled in the 2021-22 Virtual Distance Challenge, an event sponsored by Indiana Swimming to encourage participation and/or training in distance events during the winter holiday season, a period traditionally known for heavy training. Thirteen Club Olympia swimmers won 21 out of 64 events contested.

Pendleton and Erica Samuel each won all three of their events. Both captured the 1650 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 400 IM.

Double winners included Emily Meek (8) and Aahah Gupta (8) in the 1000 freestyle and 400 IM and Maggie Johnson (17) and Dathan Wolf (18) in the 1650 freestyle and 1000 freestyle. Single winners were Shreyan Kulkarni (9) and Rylan Perkins (17) in the 1650 freestyle; Annie Murer (16) and Olivia Morlok (19) in the 1000 freestyle and Tony Machavariani (9), Misha Machavariani (14) and Ty Mayer (15) in the 400 IM.

HOCKEY

Icemen go 0-3-1

The Columbus Icemen lost to Homested 5-0, tied Leo 2-2 and lost to Munster 5-3 and LSJ 5-1. Alex Clark and Evan Federle each netted two goals and one assist; John Ferguson had one goal and three assists; Carter Green notched one goal and one assist and Will Kushner, Cole Vreehland and Jayden Pagan all added one assist. Jake McMullen and Ben Blanz split time in net.

Columbus Flames Bantam A played Cincinnati Swords and lost 3-1 and won 2-7 and played Miami Redhawks, winning 4-0 and tying 2-2. River Degner netted five goals and one assist, Wyatt Warner and Eduardo Aranda each recorded three goals and two assists, Cole Finney had one goal and three assists, Will Jamerson and Hayden Johnson each scored one goal and Carson King added two assists. Jackson Wheatley was in net.

Peewee A played Louisville Ice Cardinals, tied 4-4 and winning 7-3, and fell to Junior Fuel Gold 2-1 and 8-0. Brooks Larsh netted five goals and two assists, Ryan McGhehey scored three goals, Simon Barnes had two goals and two assists, Carter Davis added one goal and two assists, Ethan Neumann recorded one goal and one assist and Henry Jamerson and Grace Wallace each added one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a 79% save rate.

Peewee B lost to the Louisville Ice Cardinals 2-0 and 2-1. Uriah Oliphant scored the goal off assists from Cooper Ross and Ayden Richardson. Gabe Marsh was in net.

Squirt A played Junior Fuel Black, falling 4-0 and winning 2-1, and lost to Junior Fuel Gold 5-3 and 4-3. Maddox Coy and Max Perez each netted two goals and one assist, Robby Orgass and Carter Harris each had 1 goal and 1 assist, Bentley Hampton and Thomas King each scored one goal, Keaton Grube recorded three assists and Logan Barringer added one assist. Cayden Long was in net with and 85% save percentage.

Squirt B lost to Dayton Stealth 5-2 and 3-1 and played South Indy Sharks, tying 2-2 and falling 3-1. Thomas Degner scored three goals, Carson Sims and Graham Barnes each had one goal and one assist and Declan McGurk scored one goal. Knox Coen was in net.

BROOMBALL

Hansons stay on top

Hansons maintained first place in the Columbus Broomball League with a 4-2 win against Toyota Tsunamis.

Matt Psota scored two goals for Hansons (7-1-1), and Erik Spilling and Ryan Jepson each added one. Greg McNealy had both goals for Tsunamis (2-6-1).

Our Name Is Earl (6-3) moved into a second-place with with Monsters of Rock with a 3-1 win against Jennings County BC (1-6-2). Ellie Lutz netted two goals, and Darren Eckerly had one for Earl. Eric Wernke scored for Jennings.

Monsters of Rock (5-2-2) and CCA (2-5-2) played to a 0-0 tie.
