COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police officers arrested a local man on a number of charges on Friday evening including operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he was involved in a leaving the scene crash with his 1-year-old child in the vehicle.

Shortly after 11 p.m., CPD officers responded to the area of 10th Street and Cottage Avenue responding to a leaving-the-scene crash, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Witnesses reported that one of the drivers involved in the crash fled the scene with a small child inside his car. Officers located the suspect’s damaged vehicle a couple blocks away and made contact with the driver, Pablo A. Calderon Lasaro, 20, of Columbus.

The officers noted that Lasaro was holding a small child that sustained minor injuries in the crash. While speaking with Lasaro, the officers noted that his speech was slurred and he
had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, Harris said.
Lasaro failed a number of field sobriety exercises administered by officers at the scene and was later transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood alcohol test. Upon his discharge from the hospital he was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on the following preliminary charges: — –Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (Endangerment)
–Child Neglect
–Leaving the Scene of an Accident
–Illegal Consumption of an Alcoholic Beverage
