COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus firefighters responded to a residential storage shed fire this morning in the 900 block of Chestnut Street.

Crews were dispatched to 914 Chestnut St. at approximately 4:28 a.m., said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported a fully involved backyard storage building with fire extending to a vehicle parked near the structure. Additionally, firefighters reported that the extreme heat caused by the blaze radiated to a nearby home at 908 Chestnut St. That home sustained damages to vinyl siding as a result of the fire, Wilson said.

Firefighters deployed a hose line down an alleyway to reach the burning building. Crews quickly applied water on to two homes near the fire in an effort to prevent additional damages from radiant heat. With the exposure buildings cooled, firefighters directed water streams onto the vehicle and storage shed, approximately 150 square feet in size, and quickly brought the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage caused by the fire is estimated at $6,000, Wilson said. Damages at 908 Chestnut St. were limited and did not extend into the structure. No injuries were reported at the scene.
