Prep sports notebook: East, North to host football scrimmages

Columbus East and Columbus North football fans will have a chance to get an early look at their teams when they host preseason scrimmages on Friday night.

The scrimmage opponents for the two schools remain the same as the past few years. The Olympians will host Martinsville, while the Bull Dogs entertain Greenwood.

In other scrimmages Friday night, Jennings County will host Brownstown Central, Brown County visits Monrovia, Edinburgh will host the Indianapolis HomeSchool Crimson Knights and South Decatur hosts Union County.

All of those scrimmages are scheduled for 7 p.m.

The regular season begins Aug. 19. East will host Whiteland, North visits Decatur Central, Jennings will visit South Dearborn, Brown County hosts Owen Valley, Edinburgh will host Indianapolis Tindley and South Decatur hosts its rivalry game with North Decatur.

Other sports begin Saturday

Volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross-country and boys tennis teams may open their regular seasons as early as Saturday. Girls golf started last week.

Columbus East will begin seasons in three sports — boys soccer at Perry Meridian, girls cross-country at the South Dearborn Invitational and boys tennis at home against Greenwood — on Saturday. Columbus North opens with Conference Indiana contests in boys soccer at Southport and girls soccer at Terre Haute South that day.

Most of the area fall sports teams start their seasons on Monday or Tuesday.

East to host golf invitational

Columbus East will host a girls golf invitational Saturday at Otter Creek.

Columbus North, Brown County and Edinburgh will be among the teams competing, along with the Olympians. Teams will play the North and West Nines, beginning with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

North softball to hold callout

Columbus North softball coach Ron McDonald will be holding a player-parent callout meeting for all those who plan to participate in the 2023 softball season from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday in the North High School cafeteria.

Coaches will be discussing dates and times of offseason workouts, practices and conditioning, as well as several other important items.
