Olympians, Cougars finish in tie

Bloomington North grabbed the early lead in Tuesday night’s boys soccer contest against host Columbus East at the BCSC Soccer Complex.

The Olympians leveled the match in the second half, leading to a 1-1 draw.

The Cougars (2-1-1) got on the board first in the seventh minute when they moved the ball forward and made the cross to Omar Zaneer in the box. He got the touch, and the kick went straight into the net to take the lead.

East (0-3-1) had several chances to get the equalizer in the first half, but none of the attempted shots found the goal.

In the second half, it all changed. The Olympians patience at getting the equalizer paid off when Gui Silva Coelho took a shot from the left side of the box, and it just snuck inside the far post to level the game in the 63rd minute

Bloomington North tried to break the draw in the late stages of the game, but East goalkeeper Pete Coriden and the defense preserved the draw.

The Cougars outshot the Olympians 7-6. Coriden posted three saves.

“We’re getting back to the drawing board and building some chemistry up with those guys that haven’t gotten a lot of varsity time,” East coach Josh Gonsior said. “We’re continuing to build on each game and it will be a challenge, but we’re up for the challenge. We continue to take positives from each game and build on those. Ultimately, the goal is to be where we need to be at the end of the season come tournament time.”

East hopes to get its first win of the season when it takes on crosstown foe and Class 3A No. 12 Columbus North on Thursday with an approximate 7:45 kickoff.
