Prep sports notebook: East’s Dean reaches milestone

Gabby Dean

A shoulder injury has slowed Gabby Dean a bit this season, but the Columbus East senior recently eclipsed a milestone.

Dean recorded her 250th career block Tuesday in the Olympians’ three-set volleyball win at Bedford North Lawrence.

The 6-foot-4 Illinois recruit, who returned to the lineup last week after taking a week off to rest the shoulder, has 22 blocks in 24 sets played this season. She also has 94 kills and is hitting at a .461 percentage.

The Olympians (8-7, 2-2) visit New Albany tonight for a key Hoosier Hills Conference matchup.

Vogel to play volleyball at Hanover

Jennings County senior setter Megan Vogel has committed to continue her volleyball career at Hanover.

Vogel leads the Panthers with 355 assists and 24 aces and also has 69 kills, 26 blocks and 161 digs in 52 sets for the 11-6 Panthers, who visit Columbus North tonight.

Tonight’s North-Jennings game will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the senior project of North hitter Logan Branstetter. Both teams will wear pink, and money raised from the game will go to Jill Bless, who is battling breast cancer.

East tennis match moved to North

Columbus East’s home boys tennis match scheduled for today against Seymour has been moved to Columbus North because of resurfacing on the courts at East. The match will begin at 6 p.m.

North’s home tennis match scheduled for Monday against Jeffersonville has been canceled.

Also, tonight’s Brown County at Edinburgh volleyball game will be a 6 p.m. varsity start with no JV game.

North to host conference XC

Columbus North’s top-ranked girls and third-ranked boys will be heavy favorites to defend their Conference Indiana cross-country championships Saturday when they host the meet at Ceraland.

No. 17 Bloomington South is the only other ranked team in the girls field. The boys meet could be a little more competitive with No. 10 Bloomington South and No. 12 Bloomington North chasing the Bull Dogs.

The girls race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the boys race to follow at 9:30 a.m.
