North, East swimmers, divers set for sectional finals

A few Columbus North and Columbus East individuals have qualified for today’s sectional finals with top-eight swims in Thursday’s North Sectional preliminaries.

The Bull Frogs’ Ainsley Sherlock qualified second in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 19.47 seconds) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.40). She is 1.3 seconds out of first in the 200 IM and .87-second out of first in the 100 breaststroke.

North’s Katie Frazier qualified fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:08.70). Karissa Bevis qualified fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.83) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (57.71), and Brooklyn Pendleton qualified eighth in the 50 freestyle (26.26).

The Bull Frogs qualified second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:56.78) and third in the 200 medley (1:57.07) and 200 freestyle (1:50.36) relays.

Columbus East’s Cassidy Furnish qualified fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:44.88) and fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:08.71). Claire Brooks is sixth (1:06.37) and Gabbie Meier eighth (1:08.07) in the 100 butterfly.

The Olympians qualified fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:06.02) and sixth in the 200 medley (2:04.83) and 200 freestyle (1:54.14) relays.

Finals and consolation heats are scheduled for 1 p.m. today. The winner of each event, plus those meeting the state-qualifying standard automatically advance to the state finals. Beyond the 20 sectional champs and other automatic qualifiers, those with the next-best times from around the state in each event will earn state berths until 32 spots are filled.

Diving prelims and semifinals start at 9 a.m. today, with finals during the break in the swimming finals. The top four divers qualify for Tuesday’s Jasper Diving Regional, and from there, the top eight make it to state.
