Paul Crockett Memorial set for tonight at Brownstown

The late Paul Crockett will be honored tonight with the running of the 10th Annual Paul Crockett Memorial for late models, which closes out the 2023 Jackson County Fair. Crockett won more than 200 features in his career and was a three-time Brownstown Speedway track champion.

The 2023 Jackson County Fair will close out another successful run tonight with the 10th Annual Paul Crockett Memorial for super late models at the Brownstown Speedway. Also competing tonight will be modifieds, super stocks, pure stocks and hornets.

Crockett was a three-time late model track champion at Brownstown and won the track’s crown jewel event the Jackson 100 in 1981. Crockett, who won more than 200 feature races in his career, passed away in 2013 at the age of 79.

Brownstown Thursday Fair Results

Brownstown Speedway held “Thursday Night Thunder” on Thursday during the 2023 Jackson County Fair. Shelby Miles of Bloomington won the crate late model feature over Chad Stapleton, Tyler Cain, Jordan Wever and Marty O’Neal. Greg Amick of Spraytown won the super stock feature over Colton Sullivan, Dalton Fleenor, Josh Litton and Tucker Chastain. Ryan Thomas of Brownstown won the modified feature over Brayden Watson, Jacoby Hines, Brent Lee and Billy Green. Shannon Walp of North Vernon took the hornet feature over Brian Pollitt, Greg Marlow, Jeremy Shemwell and Brandon Crockett.

USAC Sprint Week ends tonight

The USAC National Sprint Car Series Indiana Sprint Week wraps up tonight at Tri State Speedway in Haubstadt. The series ran Friday night at Bloomington Speedway. Winners so far this week include Justin Grant on July 21 at Gas City I-69 Speedway, C.J. Leary on July 22 at Kokomo Speedway and Grant again at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Sunday. Other winners were Kyle Cummins on Monday at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis, Grant taking his third win of the week on Wednesday at Terre Haute Action Track and Jake Swanson, who was victorious at the Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville on Thursday.

Columbus Go-Kart Results

Columbus Speedway Go-Kart Racing, which conducts events at Tony Stewart Speedway on the grounds of the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds, held a meet on July 15. The division winners were Jeff Purdue (super heavy and sumo), Tom Kramer (rookies), Lynx Lawson (junior 1), Ayden Rudicel (junior 2), Conner Smith (junior 3), Sawyer Bohall (junior champ), Robby Young (medium), Kyle Aldrich (heavy), Daniel Burton (ped), Leroy Blevins (rwyb) and Branden McGlothlin (mod-lites).

Stapleton wins at Paragon

Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh won the crate late model feature on July 21 at Paragon Speedway. Tyler Neal was second, followed by Marty O’Neal, Shelby Miles and Josh Boller. Ricky Lewis won the sprint car feature over Alec Sipes, Jordan Kinser, Jake Scott and Isaac Chapple. Sheldon Oberle won the bomber feature over Will McRoberts, Juan Asbury, Jason Trader and Jason Trimmer II. Derek Groomer won the modified feature over John DeMoss, Ryan Thomas, Brayden Watson and Caleb DeMoss.

Paragon also raced on July 22, with Derek Groomer of Bloomington winning the crate late model feature over Marty O’Neal, Steve Peeden, Tyler Neal and Raymond Humphrey. Jordan Kinser of Bedford won the sprint car feature over Justin Litton, Hayden Groomer, Cale Kern and Colton Sullivan. Chris Hillman Jr. took the hornet division feature over Alex Wilson, Greg Garrison, Chad Nolte and Josh Arthur.

Several winners at Scottsburg

I-65 Speedway in Scottsburg raced on July 21, with Ben Harmon (modifieds), Shannon Walp (hornets), Dalton Fleenor (pure stocks) and Jacob Robertson (crown vics) taking the feature wins in their respective divisions.

From 60 years ago in 1963, Calvin Gilstrap won the super modified features at both Bloomington and Paragon.

Also in 1963, the Columbus Kart Club winners were Dale Burton, Jim Devening, Mike Devening, Max Rainey and John Arrington.

From 50 years ago this weekend at Brownstown, Jim Curry won the late model feature over Jack Owens, Dennis Boknecht, Woody Smith and Ezra Bastin.

Also, this weekend in 1973 at Twin Cities Johnny Robbins won the feature race over Leo Boner, Mike Stewart, Clyde James and Earnie Brison.

In 1973 at Paragon, Danny Bowlen won the sprint car feature over Rex Mitchell, Frank Hollingsworth, Chet Johnson and Al Redman. Horace Lake won the stock car feature over Glenn Sheeks, Slim Simpson, Gary Barrow and Ernie Barrow.

Also from 50 years ago at Bloomington, Dick Gaines won the sprint car feature over Bob Kinser, Butch Wilkerson, Larry Miller and Bobby Black.

From 40 years ago this weekend at Brownstown, Roger Absher won the late model feature over Dusty Chapman, Doug Ault, Barry Magers and Dennis Boknecht. John Davis won the limited late model feature over Dee Kramer, Carl Collins, Tim Engelau and Leon Kinser. Mike Jewell won the street stock feature over Don Barnett, Mike Bechelli, Billy Filburn and Bill Norton.

Also in 1983 at Twin Cities, Steve Boley won the limited late model feature race over Lee Fleetwood, Bob Gullion, Merrill Wilson and Chuck Gilpin. Brad Tobias won the street stock feature over Terry Eaglin, Bill Franks, Howard Montgomery and Powell Ballard.

In 1983 at I-65 Speedway in Scottsburg, Dusty Chapman won the late model feature over John Gill, Edwin Anthony, Fats Coffey and Lee Hoffman. Mike Bechelli won the street stock feature over Howard Montgomery, Willie Sallee, Mark Basham and Darrell Napier.

From 30 years ago in 1993 at Bloomington, Larry Bland won the sprint car feature over Randy Kinser, Kevin Briscoe, Jon Stanbrough and Brad Devereaux. Scott Paman won the street stock feature over Cale Kern, Denny Campbell and Willie Sallee.

In 1993 at Haubstadt, Kevin Briscoe won the sprint car feature over Mark Cummins and Lee Blesch. Kevin Claycomb won the late model feature over Steve Karnes and Doug McCammon.

Also in 1993 at Twin Cities, Doug Ault won the late model feature over Marty O’Neal, Scott Graham, Ray Weston and Dion Deason. In 1993 at Florence Speedway, John Gill won the Iron Man 100 for late models over Randle Chupp, Darrell Lanigan, Ed Hounshell and Tom Nesbitt.
