Bull Dog boys win, girls close second at regional course; North JV, East run at Franklin

The Columbus North boys and girls, both ranked 19th, had a chance to run Saturday on Evansville’s Angel Mounds course that will host this year’s cross-country regional.

The boys came away with a win in the Dennis Bays Invitational, edging No. 9 Bloomington North 52-54. The Bull Dog girls were edged by No. 11 Bloomington South 72-73.

Neal White led the Bull Dog boys with a second-place finish in 15 minutes, 57.3 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Akot Tong took eighth (16:42.4), while Jonny Klaus was 14th (16:59.7), Evan Bense 15th (17:02.0), Jace Works 16th (17:02.0), Adam Reckers 20th (17:09.8) and Logan Vanzant 21st (17:10.4).

Brown County finished 21st with 587 points. Kai Koester took 106th in 19:09.2, while Corbin Brahaum was 122nd (19:34.3), Eli Wrightsman 142nd (20:02.5), Josh Redmon 162nd (20:35.4) and Carter Condon 288th (21:58.4).

Kyleigh Wolf led the Columbus North girls with a 12th-place finish in 21:10.4. Ainsley Aherlock took 13th in 21:13.2, while Carys Glyn-Jones was 12th (21:13.4), Macy Eaton 16th (21:17.6), Emma Lowther 20th (21:40.6), Katie Frazier 21st (21:42.4) and Kenzie Meyer 29th (21:56.5).

Brown County finished 21st with 542 points. Sadie Hiatt took 111th in 25:08.1, while Kayleigh Austin was 115th (25:13.2), Megan Cumberledge 145th (26:24.5), Della Hitchcock 155th (26:47.7) and Isabel Miller 162nd (27:25.5).

Meanwhile, the North JV and Columbus East and Jennings County varsity ran in the Franklin Invitational. The North boys finished third with 116 points, trailing No. 13 Center Grove (29) and Terre Haute South (101).

Rylan Hottell led North with a 20th-place finish in 17:39.7. Damien Dixon took 22nd in 17:41.3, while Sam Steinmetz was 25th (17:47.3), Cole Stevens 26th (17:47.6) and Marco Avila 35th (17:57.5).

Jennings finsihed sixth with 172 points. Kraedyn Young took fourth in 16:53.7, while Aaron Lewis was 34th (17:55.1), Brock Maschino 58th (18:32.0), Lain Ernstes 59th (18:36.0) and Dawson Leak 66th (18:48.9).

East finished 13th with 399 points. Jackson Brookes finished 70th in 18:56.2, while Lorren Westerfeld was 110th (20:01.4), Austin Menefee 114th (20:07.9), Stillman Whittington 142nd (21:00.3) and Chris Gilroy 171st (21:56.6).

The Bull Dog girls finished sixth with 164 points, while Jennings and East were ninth (248) and 10th (262). Center Grove won with 39.

Reece Peeples finished 21st in 22:22.4 to lead North. Wendy Zhong took 32nd in 22:48.4, while Andi Carothers was 38th (23:01.9), Caylyn Pruitt 44th (23:39.1) and Mckynze Contratto 54th (24:20.4).

Haley Vogel led the Panthers with a 39th-place finish in 23:08. Avery Willhite took 47th in 23:43.2, while Alana Watts was 56th (24:23.0), Bailey Marion 72nd (24:48.6) and Izzy Logan 93rd (26:11.0).

Carly Otte finished 43rd in 23:20.5 to lead the Olympians. Amelia Fay took 51st (24:06.9), while Madison Swartzenbruber was 55th (24:21.1), Abby Collins 87th (25:48.2) and Hayden Carothers 92nd (26:09.7).
