College sports notebook: Rutan hits, pitches Colonels to victory

RICHMOND, Ky. — Maddi Rutan hit her first collegiate home run Saturday to help lead Eastern Kentucky to a 9-0 softball win against Cumberlands.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, also had a double and two singles and pitched four perfect innings for the Colonels.

Eastern Kentucky will wrap up its fall season with a doubleheader at home against Campblesville on Thursday.

Barker nets goal, assist for Grizzlies

Lauren Barker scored her second goal of the season Saturday to help lead Franklin to a 2-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer tie at Bluffton (Ohio).

Barker, a freshman from Columbus North, had an assist on Wednesday in a 2-1 HCAC win at Manchester.

The Grizzlies (2-5-6, 1-1-2) host Hanover on Wednesday.

Sabotin helps lead UIndy to victory

INDIANAPOLIS — Hannah Sabotin pounded seven kills and led University of Indianapolis with three blocks and an ace Saturday in a 25-14, 25-23, 25-13 Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball win against McKendree.

On Friday, Sabotin, a Columbus resident and senior from Trinity Lutheran, had eight kills and an ace and led the Greyhounds with four blocks in a 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 GLVC loss to Missouri-St. Louis. Her two goals and five points are tied for the team-highs.

UIndy (14-4, 4-2) will play No. 20 Ferris State and Findlay on Friday in the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond.

Stiles helps Belmont to MVC win

PEORIA, Ill. — Eric Stiles helped Belmont pick up its third consecutive victory Friday, a 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference men’s soccer triumph at Bradley.

Stiles, a senior from Columbus East, is a midfielder and defender for the Bruins.

Belmont (6-3-2, 2-2) will visit Nashville city rival Lipscomb on Tuesday.
