State Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis, announced Tuesday evening he will run for the seat left open by Rep. Greg Pence, R-Indiana. Earlier on Tuesday, Pence had announced he was not seeking a fourth term in Congress representing Indiana’s 6th District, which includes parts of Bartholomew, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties and southern portions of Indianapolis.

He’s the first to officially announce an intent to run, though more candidates may emerge following the first day of candidate filing Wednesday and in the coming weeks.

In the announcement from Speedy’s campaign committee, he is described as a committed community leader who is running to be a voice “for common sense, conservative ideas based in life and liberty.”

“Our nation is at a crossroads,” Speedy said in a news release. “We can choose the path of reconciling America to our founding principles, or we can take the tragic path toward destruction by continuing down the road of Marxism that doomed so many in the 20th century. We must once again champion the rights of the individual, rooted in our Constitution’s Bill of Rights.”

If elected, Speedy says he will work to “dismantle the administrative state” so the promise of American exceptionalism can be restored. He also said he will fight to complete the wall on the “porous” U.S. southern border. In its current state, he alleges the incomplete wall leaves America “vulnerable to criminal cartels and terrorists,” according to the news release.

Speedy is a small business owner and a real estate investor with over 20 years of experience. He is also a “a champion of free market principles” as he knows the power of free enterprise first-hand, the news release said.

A former Indianapolis City-County Council member, Speedy has served in the Indiana House of Representatives since 2010, representing southeastern Marion County as part of House District 90. He is the chair of the House Financial Institutions committee and sits on the Judiciary and Roads & Transportation committees.

He received a bachelor’s of science degree from the Indiana University School of Business, and a a law degree from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He also served as an associate deacon at the Living Word Bible Church in Indianapolis, the news release said.
