2014

Struggling Columbus residents received food and other assistance from the Salvation Army after the church and social service agency raised $107,938 during the holiday Red Kettle campaign. Husband and wife leaders Lt. Alan Sladek and Lt. Jodi Sladek said they were amazed by the community’s generosity.

1999

The Volunteers in Medicine clinic received a $15,000 United Way Community Resource Fund Grant to continue helping low-income patients qualify for free medication. VIM received the largest of the grants made to 14 nonprofit agencies.

1974

Swiss motion sculptor Jean Tinguely was preparing to move his sculpture, called Chaos I, from the old Columbus pumphouse to The Commons. Tinguely was commissioned by the city to create the towering work, which included a maze of rotating wheels and balls rolling down a chute.
