Jennings nonprofits have till Feb. 26 to apply for food, housing funds

JENNINGS COUNTY — Qualified local nonprofit service agencies may apply for a share of $10,030 in federal funds for emergency food and shelter programs through Feb. 26, United Way of Jennings County announced this week.

The county has received funding for emergency food and shelter assistance through Phase 41 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program as appropriated by Congress through the Department of Homeland Security.

Jennings County United Way is administering the program. A local board comprised of members of various leading national nonprofits and agencies will determine how the funds awarded to the county will be distributed among local qualifying agencies.

The Jennings County Emergency Food & Shelter Program Board is encouraging local agencies that meet requirements to apply for the funds. More about the local program is available online at efsp.jcunitedway.org.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

  • be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government;
  • be eligible to receive federal funds;
  • have an adequate accounting system;
  • practice nondiscrimination;
  • have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and;
  • if they are a private voluntary organization, have an active voluntary board of directors.

Nonprofit organizations or public agencies interested in applying for funding may submit questions or apply online now at efsp.jcunitedway.org.

Training for local recipient organizations is required. Two representatives from each LRO must participate in this online training. Details are available at efsp.jcunitedway.org, or by calling the office in North Vernon at 812-346-5257.
