Looking Back – Feb. 15

A bottle gas regulator, related to a county police case, receives a name of its own, Chaos II, while sitting in front of the Law Enforcement Building on Feb. 15, 1974. The rusting metal evidently reminded some passersby of sculptor Jean Tingley’s Chaos, which was under construction in the downtown mall.

2014

The Columbus City Band presented its winter concert at The Commons, which featured hymns such as “Beautiful Savior” and Broadway works. The band dates back to 1843 and is composed of volunteer musicians who devote their time to making music for educational programs.

1999

Columbus Regional Hospital became one of 32 places statewide that served as a distribution site for child safety seats as part of Project Safety Enforcement and Teaching (SEAT). The program allowed police officers to distribute vouchers for free child safety seats.

1974

Columbus Bakalar Municipal Airport received a $135,000 grant from the Indiana Aeronautics Commission to partially finance a $1.5 million runway improvement program. Columbus received the largest grant in the state’s two-year, $900,000 program for local funding of major airport improvements.
