Ronald E. “Gene” Hammond

ELIZABETHTOWN

Ronald E. “Gene” Hammond, 90, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024. He was born May 20, 1933 in Elizabethtown to Kenneth and Margaret (McClure) Hammond. They preceded him in death.

Mr. Hammond was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean War era. He retired from Arvin Industries after 44 years of employment. Gene started at Arvin fixing toasters (Gene could fix nearly anything). He then worked in the tool and die room for many years making models of stereo fronts. Gene taught himself computer assisted design (CAD). His love of computers combined with his love of family lead to spending many years of his retirement tracing his family roots and the history of Elizabethtown.

Gene deeply loved his family. His grandchildren brought him the greatest joy. He would gladly drive across counties to babysit them day or night for the chance to spend time with them. Gene passed his love of being outdoors and animals to his family through hikes at Clifty Falls, picnics at Brown County and horsebacking riding at “the place.” Gene was a self-taught man who taught himself everything from computers to building houses. In return he taught us how to love and respect others.

In addition to his parents, his wife of 59 years, Clarice Imogene Hammond; brother, Thomas Hammond; and sister-in-law, Alma Hammond, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving children, Sherry (Mike) Noblitt of Columbus, Stephanie (Michael) Berry of Greenwood, and Ron Hammond of Brownstown; grandchildren, Kristyn Dingledy, Matt (Shalah) Noblitt, Keegan and Brock Berry, Justin (Cinnamon) Hammond, and Miranda (Michael) Abram; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Will, Adalynn, and Ian Dingledy, Gaines and Porter Noblitt, and McKynzie Abram; and a sister, Sharon (Bob) Lay. Also surviving are several nieces.

The funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2024 at Hathaway-Myers Chapel with Rev. Robert Lay officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Springer Cemetery.

Visitation will also be at the funeral home Friday from 1-3 p.m.
