College sports notebook: King scores final basket in Boilers’ record-setting NCAA victory

INDIANAPOLIS — Sam King scored on a putback in the final minute Sunday to give Purdue a school record for points in an NCAA Tournament game in its 106-67 second-round win against Utah State.

King, a sophomore from Columbus North, and the Boilermakers (31-4) are the top seeds in the Midwest Region. They will play fifth-seeded Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 at 7:39 p.m. Friday in Detroit.

Rutan fans 13 in 1-hit shutout

RICHMOND, Ky. — Maddi Rutan threw a one-hit shutout with a career-high 13 strikeouts Sunday to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 3-0 ASUN win against Kennesaw State.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, also pitched the first three innings Saturday in a 5-4 win over Kennesaw State in the first game of a doubleheader. She went 1 for 2 at the plate in a 3-2 win in the second game.

The Colonels (23-4, 6-0) will host Northern Kentucky on Wednesday.

Norman powers Marian to win

INDIANAPOLIS — Sierra Norman went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs Friday in Marian’s 11-3 Crossroads League win against Indiana Wesleyan in the first game of a doubleheader.

Norman, a senior from Columbus North, went 1 for 2 with a sacrifice and two RBIs in a 9-8 loss in the second game. On Saturday, Norman went 2 for 3 in a 7-4 win against Spring Arbor in the second game of a Crossroads League doubleheader.

The Knights (19-3, 8-2) will host doubleheaders with Bethel on Tuesday and Indiana Tech on Wednesday.

Foster helps Orange post victory

Kyler McIntosh allowed only one hit and no walks and struck out three over the final two innings Sunday in Alabama State’s 7-0 SWAC win against Alabama A&M.

Burnett notches pair of saves

Alec Burnett earned his first two saves of the season last week in helping Wagner to victories.

Burnett, a sixth-year-senior from Columbus East, struck out two in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday in an 8-7 win against Iona. On Friday, he had one strikeout in a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 3-2 Northeast Conference win at Central Connecticut State.

Redmon records three hits in loss

FRANKLIN — Dyllan Redmon went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI Sunday in Franklin’s 7-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Rose-Hulman in the second game of a doubleheader.
