Mildred Ray Montgomery

COLUMBUS, INDIANA

Mildred Montgomery passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, surrounded by her children at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

She was born in Charlestown, Indiana on May 1, 1947, to Arthur and Clodas (Wilhelm) Potts. She graduated from Charlestown High School in 1965.

Mildred married Ira Richard “Dick” Montgomery Jr. February 18, 1967. Together, they raised two daughters and one son. The two of them shared a love of birds and spent their free time traveling, boating, fishing and bird watching.

Over her lifetime, Mildred did bookkeeping, was a nurse’s aide, business owner with her husband, had a daycare for 25 years and ended her career with Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation as a Book Buddy Site Supervisor at Smith Elementary for 20 years.

Mildred was most passionate about her children and grandchildren. She taught many children to read and children’s literacy held a special place in her heart. Mildred was passionate about word pronunciation and prided herself with beautiful penmanship. She will forever be remembered as the neighborhood mom. Mildred loved birds, especially hummingbirds and she enjoyed knitting &crocheting.

Survivors include her children, Christin (Thomas) Stuhrenberg, Denise (Patrick) Zaharako and Ira Richard (Wendy) Montgomery III; grandchildren, Byron (Jennifer) Zaharako, Whitley Montgomery, Amelia Zaharako and Ira Richard Montgomery IV; great-grandchild, Iris Pool; a nephew James (Patty) Davis who was like a brother; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Sandra Moreland.

Preceding her in death are her husband; parents; and siblings, Charles Potts, Sedalia Potts and Arthur “Buddy” Potts Jr.; and her lifelong friend, Patricia Stivers.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. April 20, 2024, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Pastor Al White will officiate. Family and friends may gather for visitation from at 9 a.m. until the time of the celebration. In keeping with Mildred’s wishes cremation was chosen. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Reddington Cemetery.
