JENNINGS COUNTY: Jury convicts suspect of Level 4 felony child solicitation

JENNINGS COUNTY — A North Vernon suspect has been convicted in a jury trial in Jennings County  on a Level 4 felony charge of child solicitation.
Sentencing is pending for Douglas Cherry, 64, North Vernon, according to the Jennings County Sheriff’s office.

According to investigators, Cherry was accused of having online conversations with what he believed to be a 13-year-old female from North Vernon. Those conversations became sexual in nature. After a month of online chatting, Cherry drove to a residence in Jennings County with the intention of having a sexual encounter with the 13-year-old, however when he arrived, he was met with several deputies from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, according to investigators.
Cherry was transported to the Jennings County jail and interviewed as part of the investigation. He was then remanded to jail staff where he remained incarcerated until approximately June of 2023.
His jury trial concluded April 16 with a guilty verdict, according to investigators.
