Marie Moore

COLUMBUS

On April 17, 2024, Marie Smith Moore 92, of Columbus, Indiana passed to be with her Lord in Heaven.

Marie Moore was born on January 18, 1932, in Indianapolis, and was the daughter of Glenn Smith and Leota Cox Smith.

Marie graduated in 1949 from Converse High School and went on to attend Earlham College. While in college, she was a majorette. During her time at Earlham, she met Dudley Moore, whom she later married. She graduated in 1953 with a degree in elementary education.

Dudley and Marie married on June 12, 1954. They lived their early married life at Camp LeJeune, where Marie taught kindergarten. After Camp LeJeune, they spent two years serving together at The Whites Institute in Wabash, Indiana. They then moved to Dearborn, MI, for a few years where Marie completed her Masters in Education at Eastern Michigan University. Dudley’s involvement in Cummins Engine Company brought them to Columbus. Shortly after moving, Marie started teaching at L.C. Schmitt elementary school. She adored her students, room parents, student teachers, and coworkers. It was a common occurrence for Marie to have past students approach her and share fond memories of being in her classroom. This brought her much joy. In 1984, Marie was the recipient of the Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award. She taught at various levels including kindergarten,

first, and second grades. Marie was a revered educator and retired after spending 37 years teaching in the classroom.

Highly involved in her community, Marie served in the North Christian Church choir and as a Deaconess. She spent time volunteering at First Call for Help. In later years, she was a long-time member of Westside Community Church and involved in Bible Study. Her church family was very important to her and very gracious to her over the years. She was an active alumni member of Earlham College and served on their alumni council.

Marie and Dudley raised three daughters in Columbus before spending 20 years living at Grandview Lake. While living at Grandview Lake, Marie was an avid gardener and was involved in the Garden Club. She loved the lake, boating, and teaching her grandchildren how to fish. In retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, FL. She loved her community at Boardwalk Caper and Chapel By The Sea. She and Dudley were active playing tennis together.

She spent the last four years at Traditions in Columbus. We want her Traditions family of caregivers to know how much they meant to her and her family. We are forever grateful for the loving care you showed her.

Marie’s role as a loving mother, nana, and “great nana” gave her deep happiness and pride. Those who knew her will remember her by her endless joy, smile, and vibrant personality.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard White, her sister Betty Dawson, and her husband of 65 years, Dudley Moore.

Marie is survived by daughter, Nancy Haehl (John); daughter, Diane Moore (Wade Day); and daughter, Jennifer Zeller (Rick), all of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Jena, Katherine, Betsy, Brooke, Martha, Rick Jr., Matthew, Alexa; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 12 pm Monday at Westside Community Church with Dennis W. Aud and Robert Vester officiating. Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the church. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Garland Brook Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
