Below a halo of swirling lights and amid the pulsating bass of Top 40 songs past and present, about 1,100 students celebrated a rite of passage during Columbus’ combined high school prom at The Commons. Embracing the prom’s nautical theme, some students rode in boats towed by trucks or on flat-bed trailers decorated as pirate boats, cruise ships or Tiki barges.

1999

Columbus native and ArtColumbus member Susan Brackney won the National Society of Arts and Letters Bloomington Chapter Career Award for Poetry. She was one of 12 performers who were recognized in a ceremony at the John Waldron Arts Center in Bloomington.

1974

Four local art students, Jeanne Harris, Elizabeth Siegel, Sarah Pursley and Julie King, were named national winners in the 1974 Scholastic Art Competition in New York City. Harris, Pursley and King were awarded gold medals, and Siegel won an honorable mention award.
