East gets first win
CONNERSVILLE — Columbus East picked up its first win of the season, a 91.5 to 89.4 victory at Connersville on Wednesday.
Cami Warren won all four individual events and the all-around competition to lead the Olympians. She took the vault (8.65), bars (7.85), beam (8.3) and floor (8.85) for a 33.65 all-around score.
Shelby Kendrick finished third on the beam (7.45) and fifth on the bars (7.725). Haiden Watts was sixth on the floor (7.375).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cougars oust Oldenburg
SHELBYVILLE — South Decatur picked up a 56-49 win against Oldenburg Academy in the first round of the Southwestern (Shelby) Sectional.
Kiley Best led the Cougars (8-14) with 22 points. Brayley Sundal had14 points, five assists and four steals; Makayla Somers added nine points and 12 rebounds and Molly Eden grabbed 10 rebounds.
South Decatur will play Morristown in the semifinals at around 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Jackets top Lancers
SHELBYVILLE — Morristown jumped out to a 31-5 halftime lead and went on to hand Edinburgh a 53-17 defeat in the opening round of the Southwestern Sectional.
Gracie Crawhorn led the Lancers (6-18) with eight points. Kenna Streeval added seven.
Stars stop Panthers
BEDFORD — Class 4A No. 7 Bedford North Lawrence jumped out to a 16-3 lead early in the second quarter and withstood a Jennings County comeback attempt before pulling away for a 51-38 win in the first round of the BNL Sectional.
The Panthers (16-5) cut the lead to 23-17 at halftime and 34-32 in the closing seconds of the third quarter. But Stars standout Chloe Spreen, who had been held scoreless to that point, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to spark a 7-0 run, and Jennings could not get closer than seven the rest of the way.
Juliann Woodard led the Panthers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Mollie Ernstes scored 10 points, and Megan Vogel had seven rebounds.
