Michael E. Gilmore, 67, of Columbus, died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Michael was born August 9, 1948, in Columbus, the son of Hershel Everett and Verna Mae Kollmeyer Gilmore. He married Georgetta Clarkson July 27, 1969, at Westport, with Michael’s uncle, the Rev. Harold Kollmeyer, officiating.

Michael served in the Air Force Reserve from 1967 to 1973 and retired from Cummins Engine Company in 2002 after 36 years of service as an electrician.

He was a member of Community Church of Columbus and Diesel Workers Union. Michael enjoyed golfing, woodworking, collecting toy trains, cars and trucks, and loved NASCAR racing. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his sons and grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Coleman officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors presented by Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice of charities through the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Georgetta; sons, Brian (Jesssica) Gilmore, Matthew (Cathy) Gilmore and Jeremy (Kristen) Gilmore, all of Columbus; sisters, Verna Marie (Marvin) Summerville of Wisconsin and Judith Elaine Andrew of Madison; a stepbrother, Chuck (Anita) Hammond of Franklin; a stepsister, Linda Cooney of Greensburg; grandchildren, Jaydon, Hannah, Garritt, Grant, Gabriel, Paige, Claire, Braxton, and Lane Gilmore; and many niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herschel E. Gilmore; his mother and stepfather, Verna Mae and Charles Hammond; and a brother-in-law, John Andrew.
