Trio of seniors picked for North-South series

Three recent graduates from Bartholomew County have been selected to play in this year’s Indiana High School Baseball Coaches North-South All-Star series.

Columbus East’s Drew Hasson, Columbus North’s Tyler Finke and Hauser’s Sam Meek will play for the South July 21-22 at Four Winds Field in South Bend. The North and South will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. July 21 and a wooden bat game July 22.

Hasson, a Northern Illinois recruit, batted .341 with 16 RBIs and led the Olympians with 26 runs scored. He also went 5-1 with a 2.58 ERA and 55 strikeouts on the mound in helping lead East to a sectional title.

Finke, who is headed to Snead State (Alabama), batted .380 with 13 RBIs, 32 runs and a school-record 43 stolen bases leading the Bull Dogs to an 18-10 record. He is North’s all-time leader with 109 stolen bases and ranks second in school history with 127 hits, 50 walks and 108 runs.

Meek, a Bluffton (Ohio) recruit, led the Jets with a 6-1 record, a 1.40 ERA and 93 strikeouts. He also batted .417 in leading Hauser to Mid-Hoosier Conference and sectional titles.

Bull Dog wins award

Recent Columbus North graduate Bailey Hester won the Kent Benson Fellowship of Christian Athletes Award after helping his team to a win in the Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic at Anderson University.

Hester recorded five points, four rebounds and five assists to help the Red team beat the White team 93-70 in the Senior Boys game.

Meanwhile, two local girls who will be seniors played in one of the two Junior Girls games. North’s Nadia Lomax had six points and four rebounds for the Red team in a 61-56 win against the White. Columbus East’s Clarie Cunningham collected six points and seven rebounds for the White.

Jet named Academic All-State

Recent Hauser graduate Matt Sweet has been named to the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Academic All-State team.

Sweet, who helped the Jets to a third-place finish in the MHC, was one of only 15 golfers selected to the Academic All-State squad.

Senior selected North MVP

Finke has been named MVP of the Columbus North baseball team.

Senior Nicholas Stevens won the Bull Dog Award. Sophomore Casper Clark was named the Most Valuable Pitcher. Senior Jake Petrusky was named Most Versatile Player for the second consecutive year.

Freshman Austin Bode won the Big Stick Award, Most Valuable Defensive Player award, the Black and Blue Award (for most times hit by a pitch) and was the Quality At Bat Champion.
