Sports Scrapbook: Columbus Icemen open season with 4-2-1 record; Club Olympia, Donner compete

The Columbus Icemen varsity split a pair of hockey games last weekend, beating Crown Point 3-2 and falling to South Bend St. Joe 3-1.

Carter Greene, Caden Graham, Tristan Tyner and Barrett Mudd all scored one goal for the Icemen, while John Ferguson and Caleb McGhehey each had two assists and Dane Weinzapfel added one assist. Ben Blanz had a save percentage of 91% against Crown Point, and Jake McMullen was in net game against St. Joe with a save percentage of 93%.

In previous games, the Icemen varsity (4-2-1) opened the season with a 2-2 tie against Westfield, then beat Brebeuf Jesuit 3-2, fell to St. Xavier 2-0, beat the Bloomington Blades 4-3 in overtime and blanked South Stars Red 1-0. In those games, Eddie Aranda and Greene each netted two goals and one assist; Ferguson recorded one goal and two assists, Mudd and Alex Clark each had one goal and one assist, Drew Weed and Caleb McGhehey each notched two assists; Will Kushner, Nate Balasia and Graham all scored one goal and Tyner and John Merritt each added one assists. Blanz and McMullen split time in net.

The Columbus Icemen Prep fell to Michiana Momentum 11-1 and Angola 9-0. Cole Vreeland scored the goal off an assist from Jayden Pagan.

The previous weekend, the Icemen Prep lost to South Stars White 5-1. Weed scored the goal off an assist from Vreeland. Syndey Morrow was in net.

Columbus Flames 14U B swept Miami 9-0 and 7-1 last weekend. Zane Lynch scored six goals; Ryan McGhehey netted five goals and four assists; Preston Bell recorded two goals and one assist; Cooper Ross scored two goals; Carter Kareus had one goal and Jack Treesh, Lilli Donica and Noah Doig all added one assist.

The previous weekend, the Flames 14U B lost 5-1 and won 3-0 against Evansville. Ross recorded two goals and one assist, Doig had one goal and one assist, Quinten Grider scored one goal, Ryan McGhehey notched two assists and Bryson Moore and Kareus each added one assist. Keagon Bishop was in net one game with a save percentage of 81.5%, and Gabe Marsh was in net one game with a save percentage of 100%.

Columbus Flames 10U AA tied and 5-5 and lost 4-1 last weekend against Indian Hill from Cincinnati. Thomas Degner scored three goals, Carson Sims netted one goal and three assists, Avery Orgass had one goal and one assist, Dalton Larsh scored goal and Lucas Oswald added one assist. Cayden Long was in net and saved 34 out of 41 goals for a save percentage of 83%.

Columbus Flames 14U A swept Indy Fuel Red 6-1 and 7-2 and South Indy Sharks 4-1 and won 8-1 the previous weekend. River Degner scored seven goals, Will Jamerson netted five goals and four assists, Sawyer Patterson recorded five goals and one assist, Aranda posted three goals and three assists, Uriah Oliphant notched two goals and one assist, Lance Kitterman and Ayden Richardson each had one goal and three assists, Simon Barnes added one goal and two assists, Ashton Nguyen contributed three assists and Tyson Tyner and Tyler Teague each added two assists. Lane Barringer was in net.

Also the previous weekend, Columbus Flames 12U AA swept the Miami Redhawks 5-2 and won 6-0. Brooks Larsh scored seven goals, Keaton Grube and Max Perez had one goal and one assist, Rowan Correll scored one goal, Carter Davis notched three assists and Logan Barringer and Bentley Hampton each added one assist. Canyon Long saved 22 of 24 shots for a save percentage of 91.6%.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia swims at IU Natatorium

Nearly 50 Club Olympia swimmers competed in last weekend’s Carmel Swim Club Fall Frenzy at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium against teams from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Club Olympia finished in sixth place, the second best team from Indiana behind the much larger host team, Carmel Swim Club.

Leading the way for the Age-Group swimmers was Shreyan Kulkarni, who placed top-three in all seven of his events including first in the Boys 10-and-under 200-yard individual medley; second in the 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and 3rd in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Camila Mejia Murguia placed top-five in seven events, winning the Girls 10U 100 butterfly and placing second in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke; third in the 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 IM and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Rebeca Mejia Murguia finished second in the Girls 10U 100 butterfly, third in the 50 freestyle, fourth in the 50 butterfly and fifth in the 100 freestyle and 200 IM, with two other top-10 events.

Emily Meek also claimed seven top-10 finishes with a third in the 8U 25 freestyle, fourth in the 25 backstroke and 50 freestyle and fifth in the 50 butterfly.

Joshua Pendleton, swimming just five events on the weekend, placed second in the Boys 11-12 200 freestyle, third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 100 backstroke.

Arjun Agarkar finished top-10 in four Boys 10U events, and Myra Jaryal was top-10 in three 8U events. Chad Pendleton, competing on a limited schedule, claimed three top 10 finishes with a second in the Boys 8U 25 freestyle and fifth in the 25 backstroke. Xavier Zhang also had three top 10 finishes with a third in the Boys 10U 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Sarthak Deshmukh and Shourya Malviya both finished top-10 in three events. Lily Pendleton had one top-10 finish.

Club Olympia senior swimmers, competing in the open division against the host club Carmel; as well as Cardinal, Lakeside and Triton out of Louisville; and three of Ohio’s top club teams — Cincinnati Marlins, Cincinnati Aquatics, and Central Ohio Aquatics — were again led by Ashley Freel. Freel claimed five top-10 finishes in seven Women’s Open events, including a second in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 200 butterfly.

Brady Beyer, training with Club Olympia this fall and swimming unattached in Indiana to maintain his club affiliation in California, won the Men’s Open 400 IM and took second in the 1,650 freestyle (mile), and third in the 200 breaststroke.

Four Club Olympia athletes in addition to Beyer, competed in the Open 1,650 (Mile) freestyle event. Connelly Furnish, took fourth overall in the Women’s Open Division. Misha Machavariani placed 20th, Ty Mayer 22nd and Todd Hundley 30th in the Men’s Open Division.

Additional Club Olympia Swimmers competing on the weekend included Amelia Arul, Advika Badve, Pratt Badve, Zoie Chandelkar, Hannah Dean, Jonathon Dettmer, Cali Gray, Neeti Gujarathi, Ethan Hall, Saya Hauser, Aubrey Hernandez, Aahana Ingole, Adir Joshi, Sanaa Kulkarni, Rayaan Malviya, Luke Miller, Annie Murer, Vibha Nagiligari, Jasper Nickoll, Kay Payne, Rylan Perkins, Eva Rayomand, Ricky Singh, Keaton Stephenson, Cavan Stilson, Max Tempest, Aarash Thokade, Daxton Wolf, Alicia Xue and Bella Zhang.

Donner competes at Pike, Franklin

Donner Swim Club began its winter season with a pair of competitions at Franklin High School and Pike High School. The team had numerous top-eight finishes and Divisional Qualifying swims.

At Franklin, Jude Abdallah led the Donner boys team with 137 points, and Mridula Muthukumaran scored 111 points for the girls’ team. Both finished in the top 10 in all of their events.

For the 7U boys Calvin Findley scored 44 points and secured top-five finish in three events. Conrad Eddy placed second in the 25 Backstroke and fourth in the 25 freestyle, while Charlie Reed placed third in both the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke. Shoki Sato took fifth in the 100IM.

The 7U girls were led by Linley Babb, who scored 57 points, with wins in the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke. Harlowe Hayden placed third in the 25 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle. Arya Dayama earned two top-10 finishes.

Cooper Bringman led the 8-9 boys with 62 points, placing in the top three in the 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Nathan Perfetto earned three top-10 finishes.

Ella Bringman was the top performer in the 8-9 girls with 97 points, taking second in 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Anna Reed was 12th in the 50 breaststroke and 15th in the 100 freestyle.

Sanchita Ponnathpur led Donner in the 10-11 girls group with 42 points with three top-10 finishes in her events.

The following weekend at Pike, Abdallah, competing in the Open Boys age group, won the 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle and finished second in the 50 breaststroke, third in 200 freestyle and 100

breaststroke, fourth in the 100 Freestyle and 200 IM, and eighth in the 50 freestyle. Aarush Mahato placed sixth in the 200 butterfly and seventh in the 200 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

In the 11- 12 boys age group, Garett Perfetto finished sixth in the 50 breaststroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle.

In the 10U boys age group, Ritvik Prithiviraj placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, sixth in the 50 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle. Lincoln Crawford took seventh in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly and 50 butterfly. Aarav Srimam was eighth in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke 100 Breaststroke. Cooper Bringman finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 100 breaststroke. Nathan Perfetto came in eighth in the 50 breaststroke.

In the open girls division, Muthukumaran finished second in the 100 backstroke, 200 IM, and 100 Butterfly; fourth in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

For the 11–12 girls, Caroline Crawford placed fifth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 50 freestyle, 50 Butterfly and 100 backstroke. Sanchita Ponnathpur took eighth in the 50 breaststroke.

In the 10U girls, Ella Bringman finished fourth in the 100 backstroke, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle, sixth in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle and seventh in the 50 butterfly. Luiza Salomao was fifth in the 50 backstroke.

BROOMBALL

League kicks off winter season

The Columbus Broomball League began last season with the six teams in action.

Monsters of Rock beat Toyota Tsunamis 6-1. Rob Jones and Kyle Roshak each scored two goals, and Tyler Rash and Zach Henderson each added one for Monsters. Greg McNealy had the goal for Tsunamis.

Our Name Is Earl topped Hansons 4-2 behind three goals from Darren Eckerly and one from Noah Marsh. Keith Henry and Ryan Jepson each scored once for Hansons.

CCA beat Jennings County BC 6-1. Ricky Hooten and Greg Thomas each scored twice, and Shawn Bauman and Tim Walton each added one goal for CCA. Darien Castetter had the goal for Jennings.
