Bo Wagner // Columbus East senior wrestler

Wagner won his match by major decision in a win at Bloomington North, then won by decision and two pins to claim the 138-pound title at Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Conference meet and help lead the Olympians to the team title.

His performance last week: “I felt that I competed pretty well. There’s some things I can fix and improve on though going into sectional next week.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I try to block out any noise and stay calm and relax and not stress over much and just go out and wrestle my match.”

Favorite drink: “Propel”

Favorite food: “Ice cream”

Favorite class: “History”

Favorite sports team: “Notre Dame football”

Favorite athlete: “(Iowa wrestler) Spencer Lee. He’s a lighter weight, and I just like his style of wrestling.”

Role model: “My mom (Jen Wagner). I’m about as stubborn as her, but she’s hard working, and she always does the right thing and is helping somebody.”

Best advice: “Earn your 1 percent every day. Do what you can each and every day to get better and improve.”

Athletics goal: “To qualify for the state championship.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Probably Hawaii, because my grandparents went there one time for a vacation and said it was really nice.”

Gabbie Meier // Columbus East junior diver

Gabbie Meier

Meier broke a 39-year-old school record for six dives with a 260.45 to and also won the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Olympians to a dual meet win against Madison. On Saturday, she won the HHC with a 407.60 for 11 dives, helping East to a fourth-place team finish.

Her performance last week: “The Madison meet was my best ever, so I feel great about that. Conference, I definitely could have done better on some of them, but I stayed consistent throughout, so I feel really good about my performance.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I usually listen to music and stretch out my legs before a meet.”

Favorite drink: “Root beer”

Favorite food: “Pizza”

Favorite class: “Nursing”

Favorite sports team: “Indiana University”

Favorite athlete: “(U.S. Olympic diver) Tyler Downs”

Role model: “My parents (Shane and Trish Meier), coaches (Doug Trueblood, Nancy Snyder and Cordell Glass) and my nursing teacher (Mindi Richards).”

Best advice: “Take your time, and you’ll be OK throughout it.”

Athletics goal: “Last year, I got 16th at state, so top 12 or top 10 (this year).”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’d love to go to Greece. It looks really beautiful and one of those places that everybody wants to go to.”
