Looking Back – March 18

Postage rates have Norton Kennedy, 62, stretching to new heights as he mails a letter on March 18, 1974. The mailbox had been a fixture at the Kennedy home for some time, acting as a gag to amuse passing motorists.

2014

The Purdue Extension Service of Bartholomew County celebrated its 100th anniversary with an open house at its office on State Street. Visitors learned about the history of the service, home food preservation, traditional 4-H programs and new specialty programs.

1999

The historic railroad car “Indian Song” returned to its military roots at Camp Atterbury after years of service to children as the Birthday Train at the McDonald’s on County Line Road in Greenwood. Built as a Pullman sleeping car, “Indian Song” was originally used by traveling soldiers.

1974

The Columbus Poetry Club met at Asbury United Methodist Church and five members read new and original poems written on the subject “Dormant Seeds.” Guest Catherine McCracken read her original poem “Seeds” and was invited to become a member.
